In the digital age, standing still is going backwards – this is especially true for the software that powers our websites and digital tools. It's sensible and absolutely essential to keep pace with developments in the digital space to ensure the availability of your services and data, as well as to protect the security of users of online applications and website visitors.
We would therefore like to explain to you the importance of upgrading your website to Drupal 10.
The brand new version of your content management system is here: DRUPAL 10!
It’s high time to plan the move to the latest version together.
Make the switch in 2023 and ensure the security of your data, users, and visitors.
It's easy to draw a comparison with your own PC or smartphone: Just as you regularly update your operating system or apps, the same should apply to your website. This ensures that your site is always up to date, both in terms of usability and—even more importantly these days—security.
Why is the upgrade important?
Security
Websites are attacked by hackers every day. An up-to-date CMS ensures that your website is always protected against the latest threats. Remember: An outdated website can endanger not only your business but also your customers. Only by upgrading to the latest version can you ensure that websites and applications continue to benefit from important security updates from vendors. Newly discovered security vulnerabilities are now only fixed by the vendor for Drupal 10. Only by upgrading to the latest version of the content management system can the security of user data and the company's IT infrastructure be guaranteed.
Usability and performance
Drupal 10 offers improved backend and editorial features, making work faster and more efficient.
State-of-the-art technology
Drupal 10 is optimized for the latest browsers and devices, so your website performs optimally even on the latest devices.
Time for an upgrade? The countdown has begun!
Your current content management system, Drupal 9, will soon enter software retirement. The official term for this is "End of Life" (EOL). This means that as of November 1, 2023, the security team will no longer provide security updates for this version. From then on, only Drupal 10 , the latest version, will receive free updates.
Important note: As things stand, you only have a few weeks left until the EOL. Please don't wait too long; the sooner you start upgrading, the better.
Some of our partners have already successfully migrated to Drupal 10. If you haven't considered it yet, now is the time. Contact us and let's create an upgrade plan. We'll help you with the preparatory work and offer you a customized solution.
If you haven't discussed this topic with us yet, simply contact your usual contact person to schedule an appointment to review your website or web application. We'll guide you through the necessary preparatory work and provide you with a quote for the system upgrade.
Process and costs of the upgrade
The systems we support are usually as unique as the fields of activity of our partners and customers, which is why a preliminary review of the system is necessary to determine the cost of the upgrade. As a general rule of thumb, the more regularly your system has been upgraded in the past, the less effort the upgrade will require.
If you already have an ongoing maintenance contract for your website or web application with .lowfidelity, your system should be largely prepared for the transition, and the effort involved should be manageable. Unfortunately, so-called major upgrades , such as this upgrade from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10, are not covered by ongoing website maintenance contracts, as the effort involved usually exceeds the scope of regular security updates.
A separate offer is therefore made for one-time, major upgrades.
In the first step, the existing website or web app is reviewed and a list of necessary work is created. This then forms the basis for the upgrade quote. After the costs are approved, a copy of the website or web application is updated to the latest version of the CMS, and a test run is conducted to ensure that all functions are available as desired after the upgrade. The final step is to update the public page. This process ensures the most seamless upgrade possible.
Upgrade process
- Check effort for individual pages
- Offer for Major Upgrade
- Release of costs
- Update in private area
- Test run
- Release of the latest version
What happens if we don't update?
Just because vendor support ends doesn't mean your website or web application will suddenly come to a standstill starting November 1, 2023. But there's a catch: Discovered security vulnerabilities will then only be fixed by the vendor for Drupal 10.
Whether you want to invest in the upgrade is, of course, up to you. But keep in mind: An outdated online application poses both technical and legal risks.
If you decide against the upgrade:
- Security vulnerabilities: Your site could become vulnerable unless the vendor, the open source community, or third parties provide security updates. However, their response time and availability are not guaranteed.
- Long-Term Support: Some third-party providers offer paid long-term support after the manufacturer's support. However, it is unclear whether this applies to the current CMS version.
- Risks: Discovered vulnerabilities could force you to take your website offline to prevent data loss or attacks. In the worst case, hackers could exploit vulnerabilities before they are publicly disclosed, which could lead not only to data loss but also to legal problems.
Of course, we won't let you down: If you decide against an upgrade, we'll still be happy to help you find safe alternatives.
With Drupal 10 into a secure digital future.
